Plays of Week #3

Reminders for the upcoming Week...
Monday 1st = No School
Tuesday 2nd =  Back to School! See everyone Tomorrow! :)
Friday 5th = Spelling Test

Reading = At the end of this week, we looked at book genres.  Fiction and Non-Fiction were the two main categories, but as we brainstormed together we came up with many sub-categories for genres that we in Team Meyer read.  Reading logs are in full swing.  Please make sure your child is reading for 20 minutes and logging Monday-Thursday (at least).  I have been impressed with all the strategies I have already been seeing and reading from their logs.  This week we will focus on on Reader's notebooks, finish our Reading testing, and begin our guided reading groups.

Writing = Writer's Notebooks have gotten off to an excellent start.  Team Meyer has explored some free writing, created heart maps (my favorite), memory maps, lists, and letters.  This week we will begin looking at our mentor texts within writing and think about how authors use their writer's notebooks to become inspired by the written word.

Math = On Thursday, we worked with our last lesson which was Problem Solving through word problems.  Rounding has been our biggest challenge in this chapter, but thinking about it step by step has seemed to help us (one of our anchor charts is pictured below).  Our plan after the long weekend is to review chapter 1 on Tuesday and Test on Wednesday if all goes well.

Language = We will begin to look at punctuation this week.

Word Study/Spelling = I have gotten some questions about spelling words.  We have finished our beginning of the year testing.  Until all of our books come in we will be working with some words many of us need to become more confident with.  This upcoming week, we will be working with the days of the week Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  We will test on Friday - September 5th.

Plays of Week #2 (Our 1st Full Week)

Congratulations on completing our first full week of school as Team Meyer!
Reminders for this upcoming week...
Tuesday 26th = One Sole Purpose will be at our school to measure for free shoes
Thursday 28th = Panther Pride Assembly hosted by Mr. Greiner
Friday 29th and Monday Sept. 1st = No School

Reading = A big part of our reader's workshop at the beginning of the school is setting up our routines and building stamina.  I have been very impressed with how independently Team Meyer has been able to jump right back into reading.  We have been thinking about how we choose books in fourth grade, what we do when a book doesn't us, and how we share our thinking.  Lastly, great job with our first two days of Reading Logs!  Thank you for your help at home! :)

Writing This week in writing we will be taking our beginning of the year writing prompt to see where everyone is individually as a writer.  Also, last week we began writing setting up our Writer's Notebook.  The decorations on the covers are all very unique and I am excited to learn more about each teammate through their writing.  We will continue to generate ideas for writing this week.

Math = We have begun Chapter 1 over Place Value.  We have worked with three lessons so far and will continue in the Chapter this week.  Some key concepts this week is to order numbers, use place value to round, and using a four step plan to problem solve.  Also, this week with will be talking about how Math Workshop is going to look in our classroom this year!
